About Gianluca Pellino

Gianluca Pellino has an M.D. degree. He is Ph.D. in Traslational Medicine and is an Associate Professor in General Surgery at the Università della Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli", Naples, Italy , currently working as Consultant Colorectal Surgeon and Research Coordinator and Profesor Asociado at Vall d'Hebron University Hosopital, Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, UAB, Spain. He has served as Colorectal Surgeon at the Unit of Colorectal Surgery of University Hospital "La Fe", Valencia, Spain, as 2017 European Coloproctology Fellow. Dr Pellino has studied medicine at the Medical University of Naples and graduated in 2008. He completed the Residency Programme in General Surgery in 2016. He completed the ESCP 6-month Fellowship 2016 at the Colorectal Surgery Unit of the Royal Marsden Hospital, London. He attended the St. Mark's Hospital, Harrow, London in 2017 with an Erasmus+ Traineeship placement. He has completed two Master's degrees/PGD, one in Statistical Methods for Research and Epidemiology (Unicampania, Naples, Italy) and another in Colorectal and IBD Surgery (University Tor Vergata, Rome, Italy). Since 2019, he is Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons on England (FRCS). He is a Fellow of the European Board of Surgery (FEBS) in coloproctology upon passing the exam of the European Board of Surgical Qualification (EBSQ-c) in 2018. In 2018 he received the status of International Fellow of the American Society of Colorectal Surgeons (FASCRS, active until 2023), and in 2020 the status of Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS). He is also Fellow of the Royal Society of Physicians of London (FRCP). He is former Regional Representative (Campania) of the Italian Society of Colorectal Surgery (SICCR) and former Website Committee Member of the European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP). He served as member of the Guidelines Committee and Communication Committee of the ESCP, and is member of SICCR Research Committee and IBD working group. He currently sits in the Cohort Studies Working Group of the ESCP. He has been co-chair of EuroSurg (2017-19), National co-Lead (Italy) for GlobalSurg 3 Study, and is local PI of several multicentric studies. He is vice-chair of ItSurg Collaborative. Dr Pellino has also been Chairman of Young ESCP and a Member of the Young Committee (Y-ECCO) of the European Crohn's and Colitis Organisation (ECCO), he is Member of the Asociación Española de Coloproctología (AECP), Member of the Asociación Española de Cirujanos (AEC), Member of the Grupo Español de Trabajo en Enfermedad de Crohn y Colitis ulcerosa (GETECCU), Member of the Italian Group for the Study of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IG-IBD), and Italian Society of Surgery (SIC). He has written more than 300 journal articles published in peer-reviewed journals and coauthored several book chapters. His special interests are in inflammatory bowel diseases, colorectal cancer, and proctology, with particular emphasis on surgical treatment of these diseases and surgical training. He is the Reviewer of several journals, including the Lancet, British Journal of Surgery, Colorectal Disease, BMJ, Techniques in Coloproctology, Updates in Surgery, European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, World Journal of Gastroenterology, Surgical Innovation, and Digestive Surgery. He served as Social Media Editor of Techniques in Coloproctology, he is in the Editorial Board of BJS Open and World Journal of Gastroenterology , and serves as an Associate Editor of BMC Surgery and Medicine. He has received the Editor Assistant Bursary 2019 of British Journal of Surgery. Since January 2024, he is Editor in Chief of International Journal of Colorectal Disease.
